The retired rock star in question is Cheyenne (Sean Penn), a former pop icon who has retreated from the limelight and now spends his days in a state of listless boredom. He is haunted by his father's past as a Holocaust survivor, and it is revealed early on in the film that his father died by suicide after being unable to locate the ex-Nazi who persecuted him during the war.
Cheyenne embarks on a journey to find this man, and the resulting road trip takes him across the United States, where he meets a variety of eccentric characters and confronts his own personal demons along the way. His search ultimately leads him to a small town in Utah, where he finally comes face-to-face with the ex-Nazi war criminal, who is now a frail and elderly man living in hiding.
