This Is 40 is a comedy film written and directed by Judd Apatow that takes a look at the mid-life crisis of a couple, Pete (Paul Rudd) and Debbie (Leslie Mann), as they both approach their 40th birthdays. The movie is a spin-off of Apatow's previous film Knocked Up, which also featured the couple as supporting characters.
As they face turning 40, Pete and Debbie's relationship has hit a wall. They have been married for nearly two decades, have two kids together, and run a struggling record label. While they try to keep their issues from their daughters, Sadie and Charlotte, the couple's constant bickering and fighting begin to impact their family life.
Pete also has to deal with his immature and unreliable father, Larry (Albert Brooks), who continually asks for handouts. On top of that, Debbie discovers that Pete has been secretly lending money to Larry, which leads to a massive argument between the couple.
Meanwhile, Debbie's clothes boutique is not doing well, and she suspects that one of her employees is stealing from her. She sets out to catch the thief, which leads to additional stress and conflict.
Throughout the film, Pete and Debbie try to work through their marital issues and family struggles. They come to realize that their relationship may have lost its spark, but they still love each other deeply and want to make things work.
In the end, the couple reconciles and decides to celebrate their 40th birthdays by spending a weekend at a luxurious resort. They also make plans to get their businesses back on track, repair their strained family relationships, and recommit to their marriage.
