Thin Ice is a dark comedy-drama film directed by Jill Sprecher. It follows the story of Mickey Prohaska (played by Greg Kinnear), a slimy insurance salesman who is struggling to stay afloat financially. In an attempt to make some quick cash, he teams up with a local thug named Randy (played by Billy Crudup) to steal a valuable violin from a reclusive farmer named Gorvy Hauer (played by Alan Arkin).
Mickey and Randy pose as antique dealers and convince Gorvy to let them appraise his violin. However, things quickly spiral out of control as the two criminals find themselves entangled in a web of lies, deceit, and betrayal. As the Wisconsin winter rages on, Mickey's life begins to unravel, and he must face the consequences of his actions.
Throughout the film, the plot twists and turns as Mickey and Randy vie for control over the stolen violin and each other. Meanwhile, a local police detective (played by Lea Thompson) becomes suspicious of Mickey's behavior and starts to investigate the crime.
