The movie starts with a briefing where the plan is explained in detail. The mission is led by Captain George One (played by Dirk Bogarde), and his team is made up of several Greek patriots and British commandos. They are to attack two airfields on the Greek island of Rhodes, which are being used by the Luftwaffe to launch air attacks on allied forces in Egypt.
The team is dropped off by submarine near the island and makes their way to the first airfield. They successfully destroy several aircraft and fuel stores before escaping under heavy fire. However, they quickly realize that their radio has been damaged, making communication with their submarine impossible.
Undeterred, they continue on to the second airfield where they successfully blow up the control tower and several more planes. However, they are soon surrounded by German troops and engage in a fierce firefight before making their escape.
Throughout the mission, the team faces numerous challenges including navigating through minefields, avoiding patrols, and dealing with traitorous locals. The tension is high as they must adapt to unexpected situations and work together to accomplish their objectives.
The movie is based on a true story and pays tribute to the bravery of the men who risked their lives to carry out the mission.
