There's Something About Mary is a romantic comedy film released in 1998. The movie was directed by the Farrelly brothers and stars Cameron Diaz as Mary, Ben Stiller as Ted, and Matt Dillon as the sleazy detective, Patrick.
The movie begins with Ted reminiscing about his high school crush, Mary, whom he never managed to date. Ted decides to hire a private detective, Patrick, to track down Mary and learn more about her. However, the sleazy detective is more interested in having Mary for himself and lies to Ted about her whereabouts.
Eventually, Ted manages to find Mary and tries to win her heart. But, he's not the only one competing for her affections. There's also a wealthy architect, a former athlete with a disability, and even Mary's ex-boyfriend, all vying for her attention.
As Ted tries to woo Mary, he finds himself in increasingly awkward and ridiculous situations. These include getting his genitals caught in a zipper, being mistaken for a serial killer, and accidentally killing a dog.
Despite the obstacles, Ted and Mary eventually develop a real connection, but Patrick continues to lie and scheme to try and win her for himself. In the end, however, Mary chooses Ted, and the two of them drive off into the sunset.
The movie was a critical and commercial success, grossing over $369 million worldwide. Diaz was particularly praised for her performance as Mary and was nominated for a Golden Globe award. There's Something About Mary is considered a classic of the romcom genre and is still popular with audiences today.
