There's Always a Woman is a 1938 mystery-comedy film directed by Alexander Hall, starring Joan Blondell and Melvyn Douglas. The film opens with William Reardon (Melvyn Douglas), a former investigator for the District Attorney's office, quitting his job to open his own detective agency. However, after a year of struggling to make ends meet, he decides to give it up and go back to his old job.

As he's closing up his office, his wife Sally Reardon (Joan Blondell) is approached by a wealthy society matron, Lola Fraser (Mary Astor), who asks her to investigate her husband's potential affair with his ex-girlfriend. Sally, seeing an opportunity to convince her husband to re-start the agency with this easy case, accepts the job.

However, things take a turn when Lola's husband is found murdered and both Sally and William are assigned to the case. Sally decides to take on the investigation herself, unbeknownst to her husband, while William works on it from the D.A.'s office. Along the way, they both encounter a host of colorful characters, including the suspicious ex-girlfriend and her overbearing husband.

As they try to solve the case separately, Sally and William end up hindering each other's investigations and causing confusion for the authorities. That is until they finally team up to crack the case and solve the murder. In the end, Sally's success in solving the case leads William to reconsider his decision to give up on his own detective agency, and the couple reopens it together as equal partners.

There's Always a Woman is a lighthearted mystery film with a healthy dose of comedy and witty dialogue, featuring strong performances by Blondell and Douglas and a clever plot that keeps viewers guessing until the very end.
