Daniel Plainview, played by Daniel Day-Lewis, is a ruthless and ambitious silver miner who moves to California with the hope of finding oil. After learning about the vast oil reserves in Little Boston, a small town in California, Plainview cleverly cons local landowners into selling their land to him for a fraction of its true value.
Plainview is aided in his scheme by his adopted son, H.W. (Dillon Freasier), who projects a wholesome and trustworthy image of the family man on behalf of his father. However, Plainview's deceitful intentions are soon discovered by local preacher Eli Sunday (Paul Dano), who initially becomes an ally to Plainview but eventually becomes his nemesis.
Sunday sees through Plainview's facade and tries to expose his real motives to the townspeople. This leads to a slow-burning feud between the two men that escalates to a violent and bloody climax.
As Plainview becomes more successful, he becomes increasingly isolated and paranoid, revealing his true inner nature as a man driven by pure greed, always hungry for more power and wealth.
