Their Eyes Were Watching God is a drama film that is set in the 1920s. The film is an adaptation of the novel of the same name by Zora Neale Hurston. The protagonist of the film is Janie Crawford, a free-spirited woman who is searching for happiness.

Janie's search for happiness takes her through several marriages, which challenges the moral values of her small town. She first marries a much older man named Logan Killicks, who treats her like property. Janie then leaves him and marries a charismatic and ambitious man named Joe Starks.
