Their Eyes Were Watching God is a drama film that is set in the 1920s. The film is an adaptation of the novel of the same name by Zora Neale Hurston. The protagonist of the film is Janie Crawford, a free-spirited woman who is searching for happiness.
Janie's search for happiness takes her through several marriages, which challenges the moral values of her small town. She first marries a much older man named Logan Killicks, who treats her like property. Janie then leaves him and marries a charismatic and ambitious man named Joe Starks. Joe is a political figure who becomes the mayor of a nearby town. However, Janie becomes disillusioned with Joe's ambition and his controlling nature and eventually leaves him.
Janie's search for happiness continues as she meets a younger man named Tea Cake who charms her with his spontaneity and zest for life. However, despite Tea Cake's charm and affection for Janie, their relationship becomes tumultuous due to Tea Cake's jealousy and infidelity. Janie ultimately is forced to make a difficult decision concerning Tea Cake.
