The movie The World's Greatest Athlete was released in 1973 and was directed by Robert Scheerer. The film stars John Amos as Sam Archer, a college coach whose sports department is struggling to find success. Archer's job is on the line unless he can turn things around, but he lacks the talent needed to make a winning team.
During a trip to Africa with his assistant Milo (played by Tim Conway), Archer discovers Nanu (Jan-Michael Vincent), a tribal boy with incredible athletic ability. With Nanu on their team, the college's sports department suddenly gains a much-needed boost in talent, and the football team quickly becomes a winning powerhouse.
As the team's success grows, so does the pressure on Archer to keep winning. Meanwhile, Nanu struggles with his newfound fame and the pressures that come with it. Along with Amos, Conway, and Vincent, the movie also features Roscoe Lee Browne as Ernie, an eccentric rival coach, and Dayle Haddon as Jane, a love interest for Archer.
