Tom Ricks (played by Ethan Hawke) is an American writer who moves to Paris after a messy divorce to reconnect with his estranged daughter Chloe (played by Julie Papillon). He takes a job as a nighttime security guard in an underground bunker beneath the city and rents a small room in a run-down hotel in the Fifth Arrondissement.
Tom tries to write but suffers from writer's block and is haunted by memories of his past. He becomes entangled with the beautiful and mysterious Margit (played by Kristin Scott Thomas), the owner of a literary society who offers him a job and a place to stay. Margit tells him that she can help him overcome his writer's block and achieves success, but as they spend more time together, Tom begins to suspect that she may have ulterior motives.
Meanwhile, Chloe and her mother return to the US, leaving Tom feeling alone and disconnected. He also discovers that his new job is not what it seems, and he becomes implicated in a criminal conspiracy involving stolen art and money laundering.
As Tom's life spirals out of control, he struggles to maintain his grip on reality, and the lines between truth and fiction begin to blur. The Woman in the Fifth is a haunting and suspenseful film about a man's descent into darkness as he tries to find his place in a new and unfamiliar city.
