The Wolverine is a 2013 superhero film directed by James Mangold and starring Hugh Jackman as the titular character. The film is a sequel to the 2006 film X-Men: The Last Stand and takes place after the events of that film, where Wolverine was forced to kill the woman he loved, Jean Grey, who had become the dangerous and uncontrollable Phoenix.
The movie opens with Wolverine living in seclusion in the wilderness, haunted by the memories of Jean's death. He is found by Yukio, a young Japanese woman who was dispatched by a wealthy businessman, Yashida, to bring Wolverine to Japan. Yashida, a former soldier whom Wolverine had saved during the atomic bombing of Nagasaki during World War II, is now dying and offers to transfer his immortality to Wolverine, as he believes that Wolverine no longer wants to live due to his guilt over Jean's death.
Wolverine initially refuses but is drawn into the web of deceit and power plays in Yashida's family. He becomes embroiled in a battle with the Yakuza and the mutant Viper, who arranges for his healing powers to be stripped away, leaving him vulnerable for the first time in decades. He also meets Mariko, Yashida's granddaughter, and the two develop a romantic connection despite the danger surrounding them.
As Wolverine fights to protect Mariko and unravel the dark secrets of the Yashida family, he must also confront his own mortality and rediscover his purpose. The film merges superhero action with elements of a Japanese samurai epic, as Wolverine battles ninjas, samurais, and his own inner demons.
The Wolverine received mixed reviews from critics but was a box office success, grossing over $400 million worldwide. It remains one of the most popular films in the X-Men franchise, and a sequel, Logan, was released in 2017, which served as a more definitive ending for Jackman's portrayal of Wolverine.
