The film follows the story of Steve, a young Greek-Australian who lives in Melbourne and gets into trouble with his boss, Raelene Beagle-Thorpe, who labels him as the Australia's biggest dole bludger. This leads him to be featured on national television, which damages his reputation and leaves him with no choice but to prove himself as a hard-working Australian.

With the help of his friends, including Frank, Tony, and Jim, Steve sets out to prove his worth. Things become complicated when he falls in love with Celia, who is also Raelene's niece. Despite the opposition from Raelene, Steve and Celia's relationship starts to blossom, and this leads to some hilarious complications.
