The Wife is a drama film directed by Björn Runge and released in 2018. It stars Glenn Close as Joan Castleman, the wife of celebrated writer Joe Castleman, played by Jonathan Pryce. The film is based on the novel of the same name by Meg Wolitzer.
The story follows Joe and Joan as they travel to Stockholm for the Nobel Prize ceremony, a recognition that Joe has worked towards his entire life. Along the way, Joan begins to question her own decisions, both in her life and her marriage. She is a talented writer in her own right, but has always played a supportive role for her husband, sacrificing her own ambitions for his success.
As the trip progresses, tensions between Joe and Joan escalate and secrets from their past are revealed, including Joe's infidelity. Despite this, Joan remains by Joe's side as he accepts his award, but must ultimately decide how to move forward with her own life.
Glenn Close's performance in The Wife was widely praised and earned her numerous award nominations, including an Academy Award for Best Actress. Critics praised the film for its examination of gender roles and the sacrifices made by women in support of their male partners.
