The White Tiger is a drama thriller film directed by Ramin Bahrani and released in 2021. It is based on the novel of the same name by Aravind Adiga.
The film tells the story of Balram Halwai, a poor Indian driver who comes from a rural background and dreams of a better life. Balram moves to the city of Delhi to work for a wealthy family, the Storks. He becomes a driver for their son, Ashok, who has returned from America with his wife, Pinky.
Balram soon realizes that the Storks and their wealthy friends live a life of luxury, while he and the other lower-class Indians struggle to make ends meet. He examines the societal structures and concludes that the only way to escape poverty is to become rich, powerful and corrupt.
Balram’s cunning schemes eventually lead him to commit murder and take control of the Stork family's wealth. However, he is constantly haunted by the reality of his actions and the cost of his ambition.
Throughout the film, Balram breaks the fourth wall and addresses the audience directly. He talks of his journey and shares his insights into the class structure and corruption in India.
The White Tiger features a talented cast, including Adarsh Gourav as Balram, Rajkummar Rao as Ashok and Priyanka Chopra Jonas as Pinky. The movie explores complex themes such as social inequality, corruption and morality, making it a thought-provoking and emotionally impactful film.
