The Weight of Water is a psychological thriller film directed by Kathryn Bigelow, based on the novel of the same name by Anita Shreve. The film follows Jean, a newspaper photographer who is investigating a brutal double murder that happened in the present day. She is also researching a historical axe murder of two women that happened in 1873, which she hopes will provide an editorial tie-in for her story.

While researching the historical murder, Jean discovers a cache of papers that appear to be an eyewitness account of the crime. As she delves deeper into the past, she becomes increasingly obsessed with the case, which starts to affect her personal life and her relationship with her husband.

The film also tells the story of two couples: Jean and her husband Thomas, and a 19th-century couple, Maren and John. Maren and John were the victims of the 1873 axe murder, and their story unfolds through flashbacks as Jean reads the eyewitness account.

As Jean becomes more immersed in the historical case, she begins to see parallels between the two murders and starts to question her own sanity. The Weight of Water explores themes of obsession, jealousy, and the blurred lines between truth and fiction. The film stars Catherine McCormack, Sean Penn, Elizabeth Hurley, and Sarah Polley.
