Summer in Birmingham: A Family's Journey+"]

Family,TV Movie  United States of America

The Watsons are a black family living in Flint, Michigan during the height of the civil rights movement. While the family is close and loving, they are struggling to deal with the rebellious behavior of their oldest son, Byron. After he sets fire to a local convenience store, the parents, Daniel and Wilona, decide that the whole family needs to take a trip to Birmingham, Alabama to spend the summer with her mother, Grandma Sands.

As they make their way South in their beat-up old car, the family encounters the harsh realities of segregation and racism. They are pulled over by the police, ordered to move to the back of the bus, and denied service at a roadside diner. When they arrive in Birmingham, they are shocked to see the stark differences between the North and South.

While there, the family is befriended by a kind-hearted man named Mr. Robert, who takes them under his wing and helps them navigate the challenges of living in the Deep South. But even with his help, the Watsons are still confronted with the harsh realities of racism, including the bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church, where four young girls were killed.

Through it all, the Watsons learn important lessons about family, love, and the power of community. They emerge from their summer in Birmingham changed forever, with a deeper understanding of the struggle for civil rights and the strength it takes to stand up against injustice.
