Bobby Boucher is a socially awkward, stuttering man in his late 20s who lives in the swamps of Louisiana with his overprotective mother, Mama Boucher. He works as a water boy for the South Central Louisiana State University Mud Dogs football team, which has had a losing streak for years. Bobby is always bullied by the players and coaches until one day, the coach abruptly fires him.
Devastated by losing his job and feeling like a failure, Bobby begins to unleash his pent-up anger that he has been suppressing his whole life. He takes up tackling as a way to relieve his stress and frustration, which is when Coach Klein, the new coach of the team, discovers his talents. He recruits Bobby back onto the team as a linebacker, and he becomes an unstoppable force on the field, leading the Mud Dogs to a series of victories.
But Bobby's success brings him unwanted attention from the opposing teams who try to break him down mentally until the final big game of the season against the Cougars. In the end, Bobby wins the game for his team by tackling the star quarterback and helps his team win the championship. Bobby's newfound confidence allows him to confront his overbearing mother and leave home to pursue his dreams of playing football professionally.
