The Understanding follows the story of a young journalist named Grace who arrives in Graves Hill to investigate a series of unexplained deaths that have been plaguing the town. As she begins to delve deeper into the mystery, she discovers that the deaths are linked to the town's dark past, which revolves around the cursed land.
Grace soon learns that the lunatic asylum, which was built on the castle rock, was closed down over a century ago after a group of patients died under mysterious circumstances. The locals believe that the spirits of the patients still haunt the town and have been responsible for the recent deaths.
