The Unbearable Lightness of Being is a 1988 film directed by Philip Kaufman and based on the novel of the same name by Milan Kundera. The movie is set in Czechoslovakia in the late 1960s and early 1970s and explores the intersecting lives of Tomas, Tereza, and Sabina during the volatile political and social climate of the time.

Tomas is a successful surgeon who enjoys a carefree bachelor lifestyle and a string of sexual affairs. However, when he meets Tereza, a young photographer, he begins to question his life choices. Tereza is initially hesitant to become involved with Tomas, but he convinces her to come back to Prague with him, promising to be faithful.

Once in Prague, Tereza discovers that Tomas is already involved with Sabina, a free-spirited artist. Despite her initial jealousy, Tereza finds herself drawn to Sabina and the two women become friends. However, when the Soviet Union invades Czechoslovakia, Tomas, Tereza, and Sabina flee to Switzerland.

In Switzerland, the relationships between the three become more complicated. Sabina starts an affair with Franz, a married professor, while Tomas continues to womanize. Tereza becomes increasingly disgusted with Tomas's behavior and decides to return to Czechoslovakia. Tomas realizes his mistake and decides to follow her, leaving behind Sabina and his carefree lifestyle.

The Unbearable Lightness of Being is a complex and philosophical exploration of love, politics, and freedom. The film is notable for its stunning cinematography, which captures the beauty and intimacy of the characters and their surroundings. It features strong performances from Daniel Day-Lewis as Tomas, Juliette Binoche as Tereza, and Lena Olin as Sabina.
