Chinatown Revisited: The Ghosts Return

Crime,Drama,Mystery  United States of America

The Two Jakes is a 1990 neo-noir film directed by Jack Nicholson, who also stars as private investigator Jake Gittes. The film is a sequel to the 1974 classic Chinatown and takes place in Los Angeles in 1948, ten years after the events of the first film.

The story begins with Gittes being hired by a wealthy businessman, Jake Berman (played by Harvey Keitel), to investigate his wife Kitty's (Madeleine Stowe) infidelity. Gittes discovers that Kitty is having an affair with a man named Earl Rawley (Richard Farnsworth), who is also involved in the oil business.

As Gittes delves deeper into the case, he discovers that there is more to it than just a simple affair. He uncovers a complicated web of corruption, murder, and deceit that involves several prominent figures in the oil industry.

Throughout the film, Gittes also grapples with his own past and his complicated relationship with his former partner, Evelyn Mulwray (Faye Dunaway). As he navigates the dangerous world of Los Angeles in the late 1940s, Gittes must confront his own demons and solve the case before it's too late.

The Two Jakes was not as critically acclaimed as Chinatown, but it still boasts a strong cast and a compelling storyline. The film explores themes of corruption, power, and morality, and offers a fascinating glimpse into post-World War II Los Angeles.
