The inventor, named George, is played by actor Rod Taylor. He creates a time machine and intends to use it to prevent the death of his fiancee, who was killed by a robber. However, he accidentally ends up traveling far into the future instead. He soon discovers that humanity has evolved into two species: the peaceful Eloi, who live above ground and are simplistic but happy, and the brutish, subterranean Morlocks, who feed on the Eloi.
George saves an Eloi woman named Weena (played by Yvette Mimieux) from drowning, and she becomes his companion as he tries to find a way back to his own time. However, he also becomes embroiled in the conflict between the Eloi and the Morlocks when the latter group kidnaps Weena and other Eloi for food.
Along the way, George discovers that the world has undergone numerous catastrophic events over the centuries, including wars and natural disasters, which have caused humanity to evolve in dramatic ways. He also finds that the Morlocks are the result of long-term social and economic stratification, as the wealthy elites of his own time created them as a servant class that eventually turned on their masters.
The Time Machine was released in 1960 and is based on the novel of the same name by H.G. Wells. It was directed by George Pal and won an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects.
