Seeking Justice: Marisela's Fight for Closure

Documentary,Crime  Mexico

The Three Deaths of Marisela Escobedo is a documentary film that depicts the true story of Marisela Escobedo, a mother from the Mexican state of Chihuahua, who fought tirelessly to have her daughter's killer brought to justice. In 2008, Marisela's daughter, Rubí Frayre Escobedo, was murdered by her ex-boyfriend Sergio Rafael Barraza Bocanegra. Despite overwhelming evidence against him, Barraza was acquitted in a Mexican court in 2009 due to a lack of evidence.

Determined to seek justice for her daughter, Marisela began a tireless crusade through the Mexican justice system, lobbying lawmakers and staging protests outside the court where Barraza was acquitted. However, her efforts were in vain as Barraza remained free. Angered and frustrated by the lack of action from the Mexican authorities, Marisela took matters into her own hands and began an investigation into her daughter's murder. She eventually tracked down Barraza, leading to his arrest in 2010.

Despite the arrest, Marisela's efforts would come to a tragic end. On December 16th, 2010, while standing outside the governor's palace in Chihuahua, Marisela was gunned down by an unknown assailant. Her murder sent shockwaves throughout Mexico and raised questions about the country's justice system.

The documentary, directed by Carlos Pérez Osorio, tells the story of Marisela's fight for justice through interviews with her family, friends, and activists who joined her in her struggle. The film also explores the broader issues facing the Mexican justice system and the impact of violence against women in the country.
