Despereaux is not like other mice. He has a love for reading books and dreaming of becoming a knight, which makes his fellow mice and even his family think he is strange. After being banished from his home in the mouse world, he befriends a rat named Roscuro, who also feels out of place in the world.
Together, they embark on a quest to save a princess named Pea, who has been taken by an evil rat named Botticelli. Along the way, Despereaux and Roscuro encounter many obstacles, including a group of vicious rats who are determined to stop them.
As they journey deeper into the castle, Despereaux and Roscuro discover the dark secrets that have been hidden away for years. They also learn that even the most unlikely of heroes can save the day, and that it's possible to find friends in the most unexpected places.
After rescuing Princess Pea, Despereaux and Roscuro return with her to the kingdom of Dor, where they must face the wrath of the king, who is angry at Despereaux for disobeying the mouse code. However, when the truth behind their adventure is revealed, the king realizes that the mouse is a true hero and ultimately pardons him.
