The Taking of Pelham One Two Three is a 1974 action thriller film directed by Joseph Sargent, based on the novel of the same name by John Godey. The movie stars Walter Matthau, Robert Shaw, Martin Balsam, and Hector Elizondo.
The story follows a group of armed men who take control of a New York City subway train and demand a ransom of one million dollars for the safe release of the passengers. The hijackers identify themselves only by letter code names, with the leader calling himself "Mr. Blue".
The transit authorities and the police department scramble to figure out a way to save the hostages and catch the hijackers. The lead detective, Zachary Garber (Walter Matthau), is in charge of negotiating with Mr. Blue and finding a way to bring the crisis to a peaceful resolve.
As the tense standoff continues, the hijackers begin to execute hostages to show they mean business, and the pressure builds for Garber and his team to find a way to end the situation without further bloodshed. Eventually, with time running out, the ransom is paid, but the hijackers still manage to flee the scene, taking as much money as they could carry.
However, Garber and his team are determined to catch the perpetrators, and a thrilling chase ensues as the hijackers attempt to evade capture and escape with their stolen riches.
The Taking of Pelham One Two Three was a critical and commercial success, praised for its intense action sequences, sharp dialogue, and strong performances from its cast. The film has since become a cult classic and has been remade twice, with the most recent version released in 2009 starring Denzel Washington and John Travolta.
