The Swimmers follows the story of Yusra and Sarah Mardini, two Syrian sisters who were forced to flee their war-torn country and embark on a perilous journey across the Mediterranean Sea to reach Europe. Along the way, their dinghy begins to sink and the sisters jump into the water to save the other passengers on board.
After arriving in Greece, Yusra and Sarah eventually make it to Germany, where they are able to continue their passion for swimming. In fact, Yusra qualifies to compete in the 2016 Rio Olympics as a member of the first ever Refugee Olympic Team.
The film explores the struggles and triumphs of the sisters, showcasing their bravery and determination in the face of adversity. It also sheds light on the refugee crisis and the challenges faced by those who are forced to leave their homes and start anew in a foreign country.
Directed by MacGillivray Freeman Films, The Swimmers is a powerful and inspiring story of hope and resilience.
