The Sun Is Also a Star is a 2019 romantic drama film directed by Ry Russo-Young and based on the young adult novel of the same name by Nicola Yoon. The film stars Yara Shahidi and Charles Melton as the two young New Yorkers who fall in love over the course of a single day.
Shahidi plays Natasha Kingsley, an undocumented immigrant from Jamaica who is facing deportation along with her family. She spends the day trying to find a way to prevent her family from being sent back to Jamaica. Meanwhile, Melton plays Daniel Bae, a Korean-American who is facing pressure from his parents to attend Dartmouth and become a doctor, despite his passion for writing.
As they spend the day together, they begin to open up to each other and gradually fall in love. However, they both know that their time together is limited, as their respective challenges loom over their heads. The film explores themes of fate, destiny, and the role that chance encounters can play in our lives.
