The young analyst recruited by CIA director Bill Cabot is Jack Ryan, played by Ben Affleck. As Jack investigates the situation, he uncovers a plot by a group of neo-Nazi terrorists led by the ruthless Austrian businessman Richard Dressler, played by Alan Bates. Dressler plans to ignite a war between the United States and Russia by detonating a nuclear bomb in an American city and making it look like Russia's fault.
Meanwhile, the new Russian president, Nemerov, played by Ciaran Hinds, denies any involvement in the bombing but authorizes a retaliatory strike against the United States if necessary. As tensions between the two superpowers escalate, Jack works tirelessly to uncover the truth behind the bombing and stop Dressler's plan before it's too late.
The movie is based on the novel of the same name by Tom Clancy and is directed by Phil Alden Robinson. It features an ensemble cast that includes Morgan Freeman as Bill Cabot, James Cromwell as the President of the United States, and Bridget Moynahan as Jack Ryan's love interest, Dr. Catherine Muller.
