The Story of Temple Drake is a 1933 pre-code film based on the William Faulkner novel Sanctuary. The film was directed by Stephen Roberts and starred Miriam Hopkins. The story is set in the 1920s and revolves around Temple Drake, a young woman from a wealthy Southern family who gets caught up in a world of bootlegging and violence.
While out on a joyride with a reckless playboy, Temple's car crashes and she finds herself in the hands of a group of bootleggers led by the menacing Trigger. The gang takes Temple to their hideout, where she is subjected to their cruel and violent ways.
Trigger becomes infatuated with Temple and is determined to make her his own. She is repulsed by his advances but is unable to escape his hold on her. The situation becomes even more complicated when Temple's former fiancé, a wealthy lawyer, comes looking for her and gets caught up in the dangerous world of the bootleggers.
The Story of Temple Drake was controversial at the time of its release due to its portrayal of sexual violence and brutality. Despite this, it was a critical success and is now considered a classic of early Hollywood cinema.
