The Story of My Wife is a romantic drama film directed by Ildikó Enyedi, based on the novel of the same name by Milan Fust. The story is set in the late 1920s and follows the life of sea captain Jakob Störr, who makes a bet with a friend that he will marry the first woman who walks into the café they're sitting in. To his surprise, a mysterious and beautiful woman named Lizzy appears and Jakob becomes infatuated with her.
Jakob woos Lizzy with his charming and romantic gestures, but she remains distant and mysterious. The two eventually get married and embark on a turbulent and passionate relationship, full of joys and sorrows, challenges and surprises. Lizzy's past and secrets gradually emerge, creating tensions and conflicts between the couple.
As the years go by, Jakob becomes increasingly obsessed with trying to understand and possess Lizzy, while she struggles with her own demons and desires. Their relationship becomes a complex and intense dance of love and hate, trust and betrayal, sacrifice and selfishness.
The film features stunning cinematography, inspired by the paintings of Dutch masters and the maritime world, as well as powerful performances by the cast, led by French actor Léa Seydoux as Lizzy and Italian actor Gijs Naber as Jakob.
