The Storm Riders is a 1998 Hong Kong martial arts fantasy film directed by Andrew Lau. It is based on the comic book series Fung Wan (or Tin Ha) by Ma Wing-shing. The film stars Ekin Cheng as Wind and Aaron Kwok as Cloud, two orphans who become powerful warriors under the tutelage of the evil warlord Conquer (played by Sonny Chiba). They serve as his loyal subordinates until a love triangle and a tragic accident leads to a quest for revenge.
As they grow up, Wind and Cloud become rivals for the affections of the beautiful and enigmatic Mu-mie (played by Kristy Yang). Mu-mie is Conquer's adopted daughter, but she secretly opposes his brutal regime and seeks to bring him down from within. Wind and Cloud are caught up in her struggle, and find themselves torn between loyalty to their master and their own quest for redemption.
The film features elaborate fight scenes, stunning special effects, and a sweeping score by composer Chan Kwong-wing. It was a box office success and spawned a sequel, The Storm Warriors, in 2009. The Storm Riders is considered a classic of Hong Kong cinema, and is notable for its innovative visual style and imaginative storytelling.
