As Jem becomes more closely involved with Owen and his teachings, she begins to realize that the church's teachings may not align with her own beliefs and values. When she discovers that Owen has been accused of sexual abuse by some of the church's members, Jem is forced to confront her deep-seated fears and make some difficult choices about loyalty and truth.
