The Stalking Moon is a 1968 Western film directed by Robert Mulligan and starring Gregory Peck and Eva Marie Saint. The story follows Sam Varner (Peck), a veteran army scout who has retired to a peaceful life on a farm in New Mexico. One day, he encounters Sarah Carver (Saint), a white woman who has recently been rescued from the Apache Indians along with her half-breed son, Nicky (Noland Clay).
Sam takes in Sarah and Nicky, despite knowing that the boy's father is an Apache warrior named Salvaje (Nathaniel Narcisco), whom Sam has previously encountered in battle and whom he fears will come looking for his son. As time passes, Sam and Sarah grow closer, but their peaceful existence is shattered when Salvaje and his band of warriors show up to reclaim Nicky.
The film then becomes a tense and emotional battle between Sam and Salvaje, as Sam tries to protect Nicky and Sarah while battling his own demons and memories of violence from his past as a soldier. The Stalking Moon is a well-crafted, suspenseful Western that explores themes of family, loyalty, and redemption, with strong performances from Peck and Saint and a visually stunning backdrop of the New Mexico desert.
