The Square Ring

The Square Ring is a 1953 British drama film directed by Basil Dearden. The film revolves around the lives of five different boxers and their reasons for becoming fighters. Each character has their own backstory and motivation that leads them to enter into the brutal world of boxing.

The first fighter, Eddie (played by Paul Douglas), is a tough American who is fighting for survival and to support his wife. He is pitted against a local British boxer and ends up falling in love with the boxer's sister.

The second fighter, Tom (played by Bill Travers), is fighting for his country and to raise funds for his father's farm. He is a clean-cut boxer with a strong moral compass who falls in love with a local woman.

The third fighter, Ginger (played by Renée Asherson), is a female boxer who is fighting against societal expectations of women. She is determined to prove herself in the ring and make a name for herself as a female fighter.

The fourth fighter, Johnny (played by George Rose), is a middle-aged boxer who is fighting to regain his former glory. He has lost everything in his personal life and is seeking redemption in the ring.

The fifth and final fighter, Davey (played by Bernard Lee), is a young boxer who is fighting for his father's approval. He is being groomed for success in the ring but begins questioning whether he really wants to fight.

As the different boxers prepare and fight in the ring, their personal lives outside of the ring are explored. The Square Ring offers a unique glimpse into the world of boxing and the different motivations that players have for participating in the sport.
