The movie opens with SpongeBob SquarePants singing the movie's theme song in his usual boisterous and optimistic way. He lives in the underwater city of Bikini Bottom, where he works as a fry cook at the Krusty Krab, a fast-food restaurant owned by his boss Mr. Krabs.
One day, King Neptune, the ruler of the underwater kingdom, pays a visit to the Krusty Krab and accuses Mr. Krabs of stealing his crown. The crown is a symbol of the king's power and must be returned or else Mr. Krabs will be executed. Mr. Krabs denies the theft, but Neptune is angry and takes matters into his own hands. He freezes Mr. Krabs with a powerful beam of energy and sets off with his daughter, Princess Mindy, to find the crown and punish the culprit.
SpongeBob knows that Mr. Krabs is innocent and volunteers to save him. He and his best friend Patrick set out on a journey to retrieve the crown from Shell City, a dangerous place where no one has ever returned. Along the way, they encounter many obstacles, including a villainous hitman named Dennis, a monstrous underwater creature, and a group of biker fish.
At the same time, Plankton, Mr. Krabs' rival, sees an opportunity to steal the Krabby Patty secret formula while Mr. Krabs is out of commission. He creates a robot version of SpongeBob to infiltrate the Krusty Krab and take the formula.
SpongeBob and Patrick eventually reach Shell City and locate the crown, but they are captured by Dennis. They escape and embark on a wild chase back to Bikini Bottom, pursued by Dennis and a legion of sea creatures. They arrive just in time to save the day and clear Mr. Krabs' name.
In the end, King Neptune forgives Mr. Krabs and restores him to his former position. SpongeBob is hailed as a hero, and he and Patrick are rewarded with a new car. Plankton's plan fails, and he is arrested. The movie ends with SpongeBob and Patrick driving off into the sunset, singing the movie's theme song once again.
