The three friends in The Spikes Gang are Harry Spikes (played by Lee Marvin), a seasoned gunslinger who becomes a mentor to the group, Will (Gary Grimes), a young and naive farm boy, and Les (Ron Howard), a troubled youth who seeks to prove himself as a tough guy.
After robbing a bank in order to fund their dreams of running away from home and becoming famous outlaws, the trio finds themselves on the run from the law. Along the way they encounter a number of challenges, including Indian raids, loyalty conflicts, and internal power struggles within their group.
As they continue their crime spree, they learn the harsh realities of life as outlaws and begin to question their decisions. In the end, Harry sacrifices himself to allow Will and Les to escape and start anew, leaving them to face the consequences of their actions and decide their own paths in life.
The Spikes Gang was directed by Richard Fleischer and released in 1974. It was based on a novel by Giles Tippette and featured a soundtrack by composer Fred Karlin. The film is known for its realistic portrayal of the American west and the complexities of the outlaw lifestyle.
