The Silent Twins is a biographical drama film based on the true story of June and Jennifer Gibbons, identical twin sisters who grew up in Wales during the 1960s. As children, the Gibbons sisters were social outcasts who were bullied and ostracized by their peers due to their race and accent.
Feeling rejected by their community, June and Jennifer began to communicate solely with each other and developed their own language. They also became interested in writing and began to create their own fiction, which they called "The Pepsi Cola Addict" and "Discomania."
As the twins continued to immerse themselves in their own world, their behavior became increasingly erratic and troubling. They were eventually diagnosed with selective mutism and institutionalized in a psychiatric hospital. Despite therapy and attempts to integrate them into society, the twins remained reclusive and dependent on each other.
The film portrays the complex relationship between the sisters, exploring themes of identity, mental illness, and the enduring bond of siblinghood. It also highlights the challenges faced by individuals who are marginalized by society and the limited resources available for their care.
