The Sign of Four is a classic detective novel by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle featuring his famous character Sherlock Holmes. The story revolves around the theft of the Great Mogul, a valuable Indian diamond brought to England by colonial rulers. Miss Mary Morstan asks for Holmes’s help in solving the mystery of her father's disappearance, who disappeared ten years ago after returning from India with a valuable treasure. Holmes and Watson take up the case, and soon they discover that the theft of the diamond and the disappearance of Miss Morstan's father are linked.
The duo begins their investigation with the discovery of a cryptic message and a single pearl found in Miss Morstan's mail. Clues lead them to a small boat, where they find the body of Captain Morstan. After interviewing the crew, they trace the boat back to a wealthy man, Sholto, who admits that he and Morstan were soldiers together in India and had taken the diamond from a pagan shrine in India during their campaign.
Meanwhile, a murderer is on the loose, and the duo uncovers a tangled web of intrigue that takes them from London to India. Through a series of events, they unravel a plot of greed, revenge, and betrayal. In the end, they discover that Sholto has hidden the diamond in his house. He had a guilty conscience and feared for his life now that everyone was after the diamond. However, he is assassinated shortly after revealing the hiding place. Ultimately, the theft of the Great Mogul is solved when the diamond is turned over to the authorities.
