The Shape of Water is a romantic fantasy film directed by Guillermo del Toro. It stars Sally Hawkins as Elisa, a mute janitor at a secret government facility who forms a connection with a humanoid amphibian creature portrayed by Doug Jones. The creature is being held captive at the lab, where he is being studied by scientist Strickland (Michael Shannon) and his team.
Elisa and the creature begin to communicate through sign language, and as they get to know each other, their bond grows stronger. Elisa hatches a plan to break the creature out of the facility and keep him safe from harm. She enlists the help of her co-worker and friend, Zelda (Octavia Spencer), and a Russian scientist named Dr. Hoffstetler (Michael Stuhlbarg).
As they put their plan into action, they must navigate the treacherous waters of Cold War-era America, where the government is on high alert for spies. Their mission is complicated by the obsessive and violent Strickland, who is determined to stop them at any cost.
The Shape of Water is a visually stunning and emotionally powerful film that explores themes of love, acceptance, and the beauty of difference. It won four Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Production Design, and Best Original Score.
