Brantley is initially dissatisfied with his menial job in the mail room and decides to use his knowledge and ambition to climb the corporate ladder. He invents a fictional executive persona, "Carlton Whitfield," and begins to manipulate the company from the inside, using his intelligence and determination to make profitable decisions.
As "Carlton," Brantley begins a romantic relationship with Christy, a fellow executive and the mistress of the company's CEO. Meanwhile, he also begins to form a real connection with Vera, a secretary in the mail room who recognizes Brantley's true identity and helps him carry out his schemes.
As Brantley becomes more successful, he faces increasing pressure and scrutiny from the company's executives. When he is finally exposed as a fraud, Brantley must confront the consequences of his deception and re-evaluate what is truly important in his life.
