Geoffrey Thorpe, played by Errol Flynn, is a dashing English pirate who attacks and lays siege to Spanish ships to disrupt their efforts to explore and conquer the New World, while also increasing his own wealth. His repeated successes in fending off the Spanish ships earn him the admiration of Queen Elizabeth I, played by Flora Robson, who knight him as Sir Geoffrey Thorpe.
During one of his raids, he captures a Spanish ship carrying the beautiful Dona Maria, played by Brenda Marshall, who is the niece of the Spanish ambassador to England and is on her way to marry Lord Wolfingham, a notorious English traitor (played by Henry Daniell) as a part of a political plot.
Geoffrey, taken by Maria's beauty, takes her captive and hides her in his ship. Despite her hatred towards her captor's pirate lifestyle and English nationality, Maria begins to develop feelings for Geoffrey, who treats her with respect and admiration. As Maria and Geoffrey become closer, Lord Wolfingham hatches a plan to betray England to Spain, with Maria as the pawn to make his plot succeed.
The Sea Hawk is a classic swashbuckling adventure that features daring sword fights, epic sea battles, and romantic escapades. It is often regarded as one of Errol Flynn's best films and is notable for its grandiose score composed by Erich Wolfgang Korngold.
