The Scarlet Letter is a South Korean drama film directed by Byun Hyuk and released in 2004. The movie begins with the introduction of Ki-Hoon, a police detective who is investigating a murder case. He is married to a very amenable woman named Su-Kyoung, who is pregnant with their first child. However, Ki-Hoon is also having an affair with Ga-Yee, a beautiful singer.
Ga-Yee is deeply in love with Ki-Hoon and wants to marry him, but he is not prepared to leave his wife. One day, Ki-Hoon receives shocking news that Ga-Yee is pregnant with his child. She is desperate to keep the baby and refuses to have an abortion, which makes Ki-Hoon very anxious since he cannot bear the thought of his mistress's pregnancy being public knowledge.
One night, while investigating the murder case, Ki-Hoon and Ga-Yee end up locked in the trunk of his car on the side of the road. There, they reveal their deepest secrets to each other. Ki-Hoon tells Ga-Yee about the flaws in his marriage and the fact that his wife has been cheating on him, too. In turn, Ga-Yee shares her fears about being a single mother and facing society's criticism.
As they talk, Ki-Hoon and Ga-Yee realize that they are the only people they truly love and trust. They decide to run away together, leaving behind their respective spouses and forging a new life together. The Scarlet Letter is a poignant movie about love, betrayal, and the consequences of one's actions. It explores the complex psychology of people who are forced to live double lives and exposes the human frailties that lead them to such dilemmas.
