After Scott Calvin (played by Tim Allen) unintentionally startles Santa Claus on his roof, he falls and dies. Scott and his son Charlie finish Santa's deliveries and return to the North Pole where they meet the Council of Legendary Figures, including the head elf, Bernard. The council informs Scott that he has inadvertently "accepted" Santa's job by wearing his suit and finishing the deliveries.
Initially, Scott is skeptical and wants to return to his normal life. However, he begins to develop magical powers and grows a beard that cannot be shaved off. He also gains weight and starts to resemble the traditional image of Santa Claus. Meanwhile, Scott's ex-wife, Laura, becomes concerned that he is mentally unwell and may harm their son.
At the North Pole, Scott learns about his new duties as Santa, including delivering toys to children all over the world, checking his list of children who are naughty or nice, and managing the work of the elves. However, he struggles to balance his new responsibilities with his work life and relationships.
Over time, Scott discovers that he loves being Santa and realizes the joy it brings to children. However, he must also navigate his rocky relationship with Laura, convince her that he is indeed the real Santa, and find a way to incorporate his family life into his new role. The film ends with Scott successfully delivering presents around the world and spreading Christmas cheer, while also being warmly welcomed back by his family.
