The movie begins with Sarah Russell (played by Amber Tamblyn) who is a young woman living in New York City, working part-time as a waitress while pursuing her dream of being accepted into medical school. When she is feeling extremely sick, she visits a doctor and discovers that she has leukemia. As she has no immediate family in the city to support her, Sarah decides to visit her hometown, upstate New York to stay with her loving parents and share news of her illness.

Once she reaches home, Sarah discovers that her arrival is not going to be smooth. Her parents are going through a difficult time in their lives, having lost her younger sister to leukemia years ago. Sarah's arrival brings back memories of their tragedy, and they find it hard to cope with the possibility of losing another child to the same illness.

Sarah has a hard time dealing with her own illness and her parents' emotional turmoil. As she continues her treatment, Sarah begins to realize that she has to confront her own ghosts from the past, particularly as it relates to her little sister's death. Her struggle with cancer becomes a journey of self-discovery as she learns to confront her fears and ultimately find inner peace.

The movie showcases Sarah's journey towards recovery, her newfound strength, as well as her parent's journey of healing and forgiveness. It depicts the power of love and the importance of family in a time of crisis.
