The Running Man is a 1987 science fiction action film directed by Paul Michael Glaser and starring Arnold Schwarzenegger as the main character, Ben Richards. The film is loosely based on a novel of the same name by Stephen King (writing under the pseudonym Richard Bachman).
In the film's dystopian vision of the future, the United States has become a totalitarian police state in which the government controls all aspects of people's lives and censors all cultural activity. In order to pacify the populace, the government broadcasts a number of game shows in which convicted criminals fight for their lives. The most popular of these shows is The Running Man, which is hosted by the ruthless Damon Killian (played by Richard Dawson).
The Running Man pits "runners" against "stalkers", who are armed and dangerous professional killers. The runners must make their way through a series of deadly obstacles in order to reach the end of the game and win their freedom. However, most of them are killed by the stalkers before they even have a chance to escape.
When Ben Richards is wrongly accused of mass murder, he is forced to participate in The Running Man. Together with his team of other runners, they try to outsmart the stalkers and make their way to the end of the game. However, Killian and his corporate sponsors are determined to keep the ratings high and the runners dead, so they will stop at nothing to eliminate them.
The film features intense action sequences and special effects, as well as political commentary on themes of media manipulation, government corruption, and the use of violence for entertainment. It has become a cult classic and is still celebrated by fans of Schwarzenegger and dystopian sci-fi films.
