The movie The Roof centers on the character of Jake, an alienated Cheyenne teenager who is sent to stay with his grandfather on the reservation. Jake's father had passed away years ago, and his strained relationship with his mother has only worsened since.
Initially resistant to the idea of spending time on the reservation, Jake soon finds himself seeking refuge on the rooftop of his grandfather's house. There, he begins to form a bond with the natural environment around him and discovers a sense of freedom and peace that he has never experienced before.
As Jake spends more time on the roof, he starts to uncover secrets about his family history that his mother had kept hidden from him. With the help of his grandfather and a group of Cheyenne elders, Jake delves into the rich cultural traditions of his people, including their spiritual beliefs and the importance of community.
Through his newfound connection to his roots, Jake begins to find a sense of purpose and belonging that he had never felt before. However, his budding relationship with a non-Native girl from school threatens to throw a wrench in his newfound sense of identity.
