The River tells the story of the Hoxworth family, who have been farming their land for generations. The family includes patriarch Hamilton (played by Jason Robards), his son Ben (Mel Gibson), and Ben's newlywed wife, Mae (Sissy Spacek).
The family is struggling to make ends meet, and things take a turn for the worse when a severe storm hits and destroys much of their crop. Their bank, led by a ruthless loan officer (played by Scott Glenn), threatens to repossess the farm if they can't make their payments.
As the Hoxworths struggle to keep their farm and their family together, they encounter a variety of obstacles, including personal rivalries and tragedies. Ben and Mae's marriage is tested, as is the relationship between Hamilton and his estranged son Jamie (played by Randy Quaid).
Ultimately, the Hoxworths must find a way to overcome their hardships and hold on to their land, even as they face difficult choices and heartbreaking losses. The River is a poignant and dramatic portrayal of the challenges faced by farming families in America's heartland.
