The Ringer

The Ringer is a 2005 comedy directed by Barry W. Blaustein and starring Johnny Knoxville, who also co-wrote the screenplay. The film follows Steve, a slacker who is deeply in debt and struggling to find a job. He learns that his uncle has a scheme to fix the Special Olympics and bets big on the outcome, but he needs someone with an intellectual disability to compete on his behalf in order to ensure victory.

Desperate for money, Steve agrees to play along and poses as "Jeffy," a participant in the Special Olympics. With the help of his friend Stavi (Luis Chavez), who is actually mentally disabled, Steve trains to become a competitive athlete and gains a new sense of purpose and passion in life. He also befriends his fellow competitors, who challenge him to be a better person and to embrace his true identity.

However, the scheme begins to fall apart when several of Steve's competitors suspect that he is not really intellectually disabled and begin to investigate him. In order to cover his tracks, Steve must continue his charade and compete in the games, but he is torn between winning at all costs and doing the right thing.
