The Retrieval follows the story of 13-year-old Will, a boy living in Texas during the Civil War. Will and his uncle Marcus work for a group of bounty hunters capturing runaway slaves and selling them back to their owners. When the gang leader, Burrell, receives a lucrative offer to capture a fugitive freedman named Nate, Will is sent north with Marcus to find him.
As they travel deeper into enemy territory, Will starts to question the morality of their actions and develops a bond with Nate, who he is tasked with luring back to the South. When they finally find Nate, Will must choose between his loyalty to the bounty hunters and his growing empathy for his captive.
