The Rest of Us

Drama  Canada

The Rest of Us is a 2019 Canadian drama film directed by Aisling Chin-Yee. The movie revolves around two mother-daughter pairs. The first pair is Cami and her 16-year-old daughter, Aster. The other duo consists of Rachel and her teenage daughter, Tallulah.

Cami is a successful writer who has divorced Aster's father but still has frequent conflicts with him. Rachel is a single mom who has struggled to make ends meet. She is still emotionally attached to her ex-husband, who recently passed away.

The two families' lives are disrupted when Craig, Aster's father and Rachel's ex-husband, dies of a heart attack. The four women, who share a complicated history, must now navigate their grief and learn how to communicate with one another. As they work through their emotions, they begin to realize that their relationships with one another are much more complex than they had initially thought.

As the story unfolds, the four women deal with the conflicting emotions that arise from Craig's death, including Cami's fear that her daughter may follow in her ex-husband's footsteps, Tallulah's feelings of isolation, and Aster's fear of becoming like her mother. The Rest of Us is a story about loss and love, families, and forgiveness, and ultimately, the resiliency of the human spirit.
