The Remains of the Day is a 1993 British-American drama film directed by James Ivory and based on the 1989 novel of the same name by Kazuo Ishiguro. The film stars Anthony Hopkins as the head butler, Stevens, and Emma Thompson as the housekeeper, Miss Kenton.

The story is set in the years leading up to World War II and follows Stevens as he reflects on his life and career at the Darlington Hall estate in Oxfordshire. His dedication to his employer, Lord Darlington (played by James Fox), is unwavering, and he takes great pride in running the household with the utmost efficiency.

Stevens' world is disrupted when Miss Kenton arrives at Darlington Hall. Despite their initial disagreements, a deep friendship develops between the two, and Stevens begins to show a more human side. He even starts to consider the possibility of a romance with Miss Kenton, but his strict adherence to propriety prevents him from acting on his feelings.

As Lord Darlington becomes increasingly involved in politics and begins to cultivate ties with the Nazi cause, Stevens' loyalty is tested. He is torn between his duty to serve and his growing awareness that his employer's actions may be morally questionable.

The Remains of the Day is a beautifully crafted film that explores themes of loyalty, love, and duty. It showcases the talents of two of the finest actors of their generation, Hopkins and Thompson, who deliver powerful and nuanced performances. The film was nominated for eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor.
